How To Make The Perfect Home Reading Corner

If there’s anything any avid reader dreams of, it’s a personal reading corner in the comfort of their own home, designed just for them. What could be better than curling up with a good story on a rainy afternoon and getting lost in a tale?

Here’s how you can make the very best reading nook in your home!

IDEA ONE

Find The Perfect Spot

If you want to create the perfect reading corner, then the first thing to do is find the right spot in your home for it!

The ‘right’ place in your home very much depends on your living space, and the room you have. Ideally, it should be somewhere that gets a lot of natural light. If you have a spare corner by a window, then that’s perfect for you.

Even the tiniest corners can work as a reading nook. ‘If you can get a chair in there, or even a heap of pillows and blankets, then you’re ready to go’ says writer Pauline Philips from Boom Essays and State Of Writing. ‘It doesn’t have to be Instagram worthy, just comfy and cosy.’

IDEA TWO

Add In The Soft Furnishings

Now you’ve found the right spot, make sure that it’s super comfy.

Your reading corner needs to be designed for hours of getting lost in your favourite books , so set yourself up in the best way possible. A big plush armchair is best, if you can fit one in. Many have even taken to putting in chaise lounges, as they’re perfect for naps, too.

You don’t need these though, if you don’t have the space. A bench with a plush pad on it and plenty of cushions will also do the job nicely. Once you’ve added in the seating, you’ll need to add in those cushions and blankets too. Make it a nest that you’ll never want to leave in the winter months.

IDEA THREE

Ensure There’s Enough Light

When reading, you absolutely need enough light to do so.

No one wants to be straining their eyes to be able to see what’s happening in their book. If you placed your seat near a window, then you’re going to have all the natural light you need.

Don’t forget to add in a lamp though, so you can keep reading even when it gets dark. Try a floor lamp that you can position behind your chair, to give you the right amount of light. There are models of lamps out there that have extendable necks, designed to be pointed wherever you need them. They’re perfect for reading nooks.

IDEA FOUR

Set Up A Bookshelf

What reading nook is complete without a bookshelf?

If you have one nearby, you can grab the next book as soon as you finish the one you’re on. “You’ll have seen reading nooks that are built into bookshelves, and that’s amazing if you can do that’ says book blogger Christopher Maddox, from Paper Fellows and Essayroo. ‘However, you don’t need to go that far if you don’t have the space to do so. Just positioning a book case near your reading nook will work just as well.”

IDEA FIVE

Make A Gallery Wall

Now all the practicalities are taken care of, you’ll want to make the space your own.

There’s likely a blank wall near your reading corner, so why not spice it up with some pictures and images to make it personal? If you’re not sure what to put on the wall, you can find pictures inspired by your favourite books.

A popular trend right now is the creation of travel posters and paintings of fictional places. Why not hang a few in your nook? You can’t go there in real life, but you certainly can when you’re reading.

IDEA SIX

Hang A Canopy

To finish off your reading nook, you can hang a canopy over the space.

There’s something very cute and magical about a canopy, as it lets you retreat from the real world and enjoy your book in peace. It’s something kids will love too, so if you’re creating a reading nook for them, try adding this element to complete it.

With these tips, you’ll be able to create the perfect reading corner in your home. Everyone can have a space to read and forget the world in, so make sure your home has a book nook just for you.
